CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION

Chapter one was divided into nine main parts: (1) Introduction (2) The Background of Study, (3) Theoretical Framework, (4) Conceptual Framework, (5) Statement of the Problem, (6) Hypothesis, (7) Research Paradigm, (8) Scope and Delimitation, (9) Significance of the Study, (10) Definition of Terms. The first segment, Introduction, shows general to specific information and the study’s main purpose. Segment 2, The Background of the Study, contains the reasons and explanations why the study has been regulated and conducted. Segment 3, State of the Problem, depicts the problems of the study. Segment 4, Theoretical Framework, contains theories related to the study. Segment 5, Conceptual Framework, depicts the input, process and the output of the chosen topic. Segment 6 Hypothesis, contains proposed limited evidence of the research. Segment 7 Research Paradigm, explains the content of the conceptual framework. Segment 8, Scope and Delimitation, itemize the different beneficiaries. Segment 9, Significance of the Study, provides brief description about to whom the study will be significant or beneficial it also gives more knowledge about segment 8 or the scope and delimitation of our study. Segment 10, Definition of Terms, defines unfamiliar word contents and frequent word usage.

Technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their relation with the life, society, country, and even to our environment. Technology also refers to the use of tools, gadgets, machinery, and resources that help us control and adapt our environment.
It has importance in our life it helps us to live comfortable and easy because of the invention of technology.

Technology has affected our day-to-day life. The internet is one of the finest products of man’s advancement in technology. People have greater access to information via the internet. However, overuse of technology, especially through gadgets such as smart phones, laptops, personal computers etc. presents a whole range of problem which may interfere with a student’s ability to learn and attend to lessons.

Nowadays students are obsessed with latest gadgets and technologies. Students often involve gadgets in their day-to-day lives including their studies. Most of students across the globe use internet for completing their projects, homework and other school related works. 

This research will guide you to fully understand about what are the influences of technology in learning. Technology has giving benefits tangible and intangible that will help in learning of students.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

These research findings are concluded and solidified by experts and scholars. It applies precise and critical judgment to come up with these guides and research studies; we compiled this information to present related studies in our research, Performance of Selected Grade 12 students in Lyceum of Alabang (2018-2019) towards the use of Gadgets in their studies.

Smartphones are now responsible for 60% of Internet connections around the world. This form of technology has advanced with simple call and text messaging functions being replaced with functions such as Internet access, email, camera applications and multimedia services. In 2007, the Apple Company launched its first ever smartphone simultaneously marking the impact on education with its learning mobile applications (apps). By May 2013, the number of apps downloaded from the iTunes App Store alone reached 50 billion (Apple Press Info, 2013).

The possible influence of mobile devices on higher education and their impact on lifelong learning opportunities is still unclear and is an evolving field of study (Kukulska-Hulme, 2007). It is not surprising that educators have considered using mobile devices such as smartphones in education given their affordable, popular and practical functions (Ismail, Bokhare, Azizan, ; Azman, 2013; Pullen, Swabey, Abadooz, ; Sing, 2015).

Technology has undergone significant progression that benefits many, including educational stakeholders. Smartphones, the Internet-enabled devices incorporated with computer applications and software, are among the eminent breakthroughs in this latest century. It is not right to deny the existence of technology because most employers now seek graduates who are digitally literate (The Star, 2014).

Lepp, Barkley, and Karpinski (2015) reported that students who used the cell phone more on a daily basis were likely to have a lower GPA than students who used it less. Basing their conclusions on a sample of 536 undergraduates from 82 self-reported majors at a large public university, the researchers suggested a vital need to sensitize students and educators about the potential academic risks associated with high cell phone use.

Electronic gadgets in our daily life influence a lot in our different times and part of life. They can affect us physically, mentally and in many ways we never had thought about it. As you know, everything has its positive and negative impacts. Over-use of technology, though, especially such gadgets as cell phones, iPods and video games, presents a whole range of problems which may interfere with a student’s ability to learn and attend to lessons. It is easy to become addicted to gaming, texting, talking on the phone or socializing online. Some students may attempt to use their gadget, which disrupts their learning, and at home it detracts from study time. Children who spend long hours staring on screens usually complain less concentration on studies. The excess use of electronics and gadgets should be and can be controlled by parents and parents should adopt good strategies on handling their children (De Guzman, 2017).

Excessive use of gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, and computer desktops can cause physical and mental damage to children. A child will likely to become overweight and develop seizure and vision problems when they spend too much time using gadgets. In Central Visayas, one of the regions in the Philippines, a National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 7 study reported that 3% of children are considered as obese and overweight. (Jimenez, 2017).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Technology integration, if done properly, can do many things to help in the process of creating more authentic learning environments and more. Many of the studies report, if the learning environment is technologically rich, it can increase self-esteem and enthusiasm for learning (Fouts, 2000).
This can lead to more positive attitudes for learning, as well as lower absentee and dropout rates. In fact, one study proved that having a more technologically rich learning environment eventually lead to a higher rate in college attendance and scholarships (Stratham & Torell, 1996).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to find out The Performance of Selected Grade 12 students in Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019) towards the use of gadgets in their studies, and to add up things, we decided to formulate other supporting questions to widen up learning inventory.

Specifically, this research would like to ascertain of the succeeding questions:
What are the profile of respondents in terms of:
a. Age
b. Gender
Income Status
What are the negative effects of gadgets to the Performance of Selected Grade 12 students of Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019)?
What are the positive effects of common gadgets to the Performance Selected Grade 12 students of Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019)?
Is there a significant relationship between using gadgets and the learning Performance of the Selected Grade 12 students of Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019)?
HYPOTHESES
The statement has shown below states the researcher’s hypotheses about this study.

There will be no relationship on the performance level of respondent on how he/she use gadgets in his/her studies.

There will be a relationship on some of selected students on using gadgets in their studies.

There are some of selected a student that are not using gadgets but has a big relationship on their studies.

RESEARCH PARADIGM
Infused with information from different related literature sources the research goes step by step from choosing specific and concrete research questions to having objectives and clear goals to carry out. The input information concepts and the process of the research making leads to a good, the output ” Performance of Selected Grade 12 students of Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019) towards the use of gadgets in their studies”. Research takes place with highly-factual data, expert’s perception and recommendations.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The scope of this study are the Selected Grade 12 students which will serves as the respondents who will be the instrument to know the level of performance towards the use of gadgets.

The Delimitation of this study are those Selected Grade 12 students in Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019), which is located at Km. 30 National Road, Barangay Tunasan, Muntinlupa, City
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
We, the researchers come up to this study to help in determining the Performance of Selected Grade 12 students in Lyceum of Alabang (S.Y 2018-2019) Towards the Use of Gadgets in their Studies.

The results of the study will be of great help to the following:
TO THE STUDENTS. This study will be significant to students that excessively use their gadgets to the point that they are addicted to it.

TO THE TEACHERS. This study will help teachers to understand the students better. By this study they will come up on how to manage such students.

TO THE PARENTS. For them to control their children in making such decision in excessively using their gadgets. 
TO THE FUTURE RESEARCHER. This study will serve as guidelines for the other researchers in making the same study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Background of the Study- In this study, the background of the study includes a review of the area being researched, current information surrounding the issue, previous.

Computer- A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

Conceptual Framework- In this study, conceptual framework sets the stage for the presentation of the particular research question that drives the investigation being reported base on the problem statement.

Gadgets- A small mechanical or electronic device or tool, especially an ingenious or novel one.

Hypothesis- a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.

Internet- A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

Introduction- In this study, introduction leads the reader from a general subject area to a particular topic of inquiry.

Laptop- A computer that is portable and suitable for use while traveling.

Parents – a caregiver of the offspring in their own species. In humans, a parent is the caretaker of a child (where “child” refers to offspring, not necessarily age).

Research – the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

Research Paradigm – a “worldview” or a set of assumptions about how things work.

Smartphone- A mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded applications.Significance of the Study – an explanation of the significance of a study may include the meaning of the research work to you personally and should include how your research benefits or impacts others in part or whole. Discuss what people or groups of people might benefit from reading your research.

Scope and Delimitation- identifies the constraints or weaknesses of your study which are not within the control of the researcher.

Statement of the Problem- a short description of the issues that need to be addressed by a problem solving team and should be presented to them (or created by them) before they try to solve a problem.

Students – a learner or someone who attends an educational institution.

Teachers – a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values. Informally the role of teacher may be taken on by anyone.

Technology- The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry, machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge, the branch of knowledge dealing with engineering or applied sciences.

Theoretical Framework- In this study, theoretical framework is the structure that can hold on support a theory of a research study.
