The Chernobyl disaster

The Chernobyl disaster, also referred to as the Chernobyl accident, was a catastrophic nuclear accident. The disaster occurred at 01.23 am on Saturday, April 26 1986 at Chernobyl power plant which is near the now-abandoned town of Pripyat, in northern Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union, approximately 104 km north of Kiev. The inadvertent explosion took place in the fourth reactor of the power plant during the emergency shutdown of reactor whilst undergoing power failure test. A large amount of fire released radioactive contamination into the atmosphere which spread across USSR and Europe. The disaster was a unique industrial accident because of the scale of its social, environmental and economic impacts. About 31 people died at the time of explosion and many people were effected from the radiation.
